1,600 Miles with this...

I spent three weeks trying to bridge Reticulum onto HF so two people could pass a real message hundreds of miles with no cell tower, no Starlink, and nobody in the middle charging a toll. The radio is a Hermes Lite 2. The hard part isn’t only the physics — U.S. amateur rules also forbid hiding the meaning of a message on these bands, so whatever goes over the air has to be legal. This is an attempt to build an open-source internet we actually own, using the sky as the hop.

Data Slayer explores building a long-range, decentralized communication network by bridging digital data with amateur radio. Through open-source software and hardware, Data Slayer investigates how HF radio skywave propagation can connect communities across continents, bypassing traditional internet infrastructure while strictly adhering to amateur radio regulations and licensing requirements.

For those curious about the path-count estimate: we estimated the non-backtracking paths NYC→SF, using a sparse spatial network model with mean degree ≈ 2.5 and characteristic length ≈ √N.

This entire HF messaging station fits in the palm of my hand. 📻📱 No laptop. No tablet. No cell service. No internet. A 5-watt truSDX, Digirig and Android phone running JS8Call let me send actual free-text messages over HF — type whatever you need to say, just like a text message. Phone-based radio apps keep getting better, eliminating the need to carry a computer or tablet into the field. For this setup I’m using the incredibly compact SPOOLTENNA Ultra EFHW. The entire station — radio, battery, DigiRig, cables AND antenna — fits inside a lesterriverbushcraft utility pouch with room to spare. Five watts isn't much for HF voice, but weak-signal digital is a different story. Under the right conditions, JS8Call can exchange messages hundreds or even thousands of miles. For preparedness, my focus is NVIS — roughly 0–300 miles. That can mean a local, statewide or regional network, or reaching outside a disaster area when normal infrastructure is down. With the right band, antenna and conditions, 5 watts can get that job done. This test: 5 watts • 84 miles • Message sent • Reply received ✓ No towers. No internet. No computer. Just radio. 📡

LTT : We traveled to Falkenstein, Germany, to tour one of Hetzner’s data centers and see how their hands-on, DIY approach helps power their infrastructure at scale. From custom-built solutions to the servers themselves, we got a behind-the-scenes look at how Hetzner does things a little differently.

This is the largest freestanding wooden train trestle in the world. It's been abandoned for almost 90 years. No road reaches it. The railroad it was built for runs nowhere. And the man whose fortune created the whole impossible thing died seven years before this bridge even existed. The Goat Canyon Trestle is the most famous piece of the San Diego & Arizona Railway, the "Impossible Railroad" that John D. Spreckels personally bankrolled starting in 1906. Twelve years to build. A panic, a revolution, a world war, and roughly 18 million dollars, most of it Spreckels' own. Then 90 more years of the desert taking it back. And the bridge itself wasn't planned. It was a patch. A workaround for a tunnel that collapsed in an earthquake in 1932. The crown jewel of the Impossible Railroad is, literally, a repair. So my buddy Justin and I rode 17 miles into the Anza-Borrego desert to stand on it. This is what we found, and the full story of why it's even there, before the desert finishes what it started
