Måske i din kaffemaskine. I din 3D-printer.

openSUSE announced that you can start testing an image on the Raspberry Pi 5. Not everything is working, but it's probably usable for server tasks and you can start a desktop environment. 3D acceleration is not fully implemented, so I'm not doing my usual tests.

Default user is root and password is linux.

Make sure you have a recent installation of the Raspberry Pi firmware (I have 2025.04).

You can use YaST to create a new user, so you don't have to login as root. And you can use YaST to install additional software.

I look forward to a new image with 3D support.

Kapitel 1: Intro Welcome to my channel Living Linux. In this video, I want to have a quick look at Open Soua on the Raspberry Pi 5.

Kapitel 2: openSUSE Announcement So, you can see that early November, they announced that they support the Raspberry Pi 5 and it took them quite some time to get it booting. And it looks like that they are upstreaming their changes to Uboot. Now, there's still a lot of work to be done, but I'm creating uh this video on a Raspberry Pi 5, or at least you see the desktop running on a Raspberry Pi 5. There are still a lot of things missing, but of course, they're working hard on it. And it might be that you have to update your EPROM. And yeah, I can show you that I have the firmware from April.

Kapitel 3: System Information So that one is good enough to get started with Open Soua. And yeah, here you see unfortunately at the moment graphics is software rendering and I'm more of a desktop person not really a server person. So that means that my uh use cases will be limited for the time being. Good thing is is that it has kernel 6.17.8.

Kapitel 4: Boot Issue (Fixed) Now there was an issue that booting uh could hang. Um but it looks like that that one has been fixed. So here is let's just say the main page for open sus on the Raspberry Pi 5.

Kapitel 5: Images So you can download different images and it's if you want to have a desktop image uh better skip KDE for now because it seems it has a graphic problem at the moment. You have to boot from micro SD. No other option.

Kapitel 6: Known Issues No support for I2S, ADC, I2C. Well, some more things. 3D acceleration not fully supported, but as you can see, you are able to get a working desktop.

Kapitel 7: YaST2 (Setup Tool) Now, one of the things that I've heard uh a lot of complaints about is that with Linux, people say that you have to use the terminal. Now, uh yeah, the default login is root with this password. And the only thing I did on the command line was change the password for root. But for instance, uh creating a user you can do with uh yast. That is yet another setup tool. So here you have a guey for editing a user, adding a user or even deleted. So that makes things a lot easier. One other thing is also that um a lot of the software you can just install it with y um so and even let's just say the software that you use on the command line that can also be installed with y with a guey. So here you can see that for instance vk cube uh falcon info you can just install it with this guey.

Kapitel 8: vkCube Now as I as they said uh 3D acceleration it's not yet implemented or at least not fully implemented. So if we have a look at VK cube then you can see that it's using a lot of CPU. It does work but it's using a lot of CPU.

Kapitel 9: Future of YaST2 Now one more thing about Yust. Uh it seems uh they want to phase it out and I think one of the reasons is that it was written in Ruby and not that many people use Ruby anymore or develop in Ruby anymore. So yeah, I think that there's not really something that really replaces Yust completely, but there are of course other things. For instance, the package manager, you can try to use Mirlin. Uh I also see that for instance like the administration part that they say that you can try soua multi Linux manager those kind of things but to be honest I never really used open soua before so it's still a lot of uh homework that I have to do but I think the good part is that you and start testing it on a Raspberry Pi 5.

Kapitel 10: Closing Thoughts And for the boot process, they're upstreaming it to Uboot. So perhaps other distributions can also make use of this in the future. So yeah, I would say anyone that is interested, give it a try. Um, first boot process can take a while. uh let it boot for a couple of minutes before giving up. And remember that you need to have a recent firmware. So this is all for now and hope to see you again in my next video.
